Beware, would-be scam victims! Here’s just one of many little tricks these scum — er, scam artists are pulling:
We got a letter in the mail today with a very real-looking check for $3750, and the promise of a total prize of $62,000. If this were true, it would certainly have made our day. Unfortunately, it wasn’t.
The good news in all of this is that I smelled a rat and called my state Atotrney General’s office. They passed along the phone number of the fraud investigation department in Canada, where the letter originated. Sure enough, they knew about it, and while I’m sad I won’t be getting the 62 grand, I delighted it didn’t cost me a couple of thousand bucks to learn that lesson.
Please remind everyone you know, especially seniors, to be on the lookout for these thieves, and report their activity to the appropriate authorities so they can prosecute them. This type of crime is insidious, and while it’s a sad commentary on how things are these days, we all need to be on full alert.
