According to the Associated Press, Nestle Purina PetCare Company is recalling all sizes and varieties of its Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. Purina says some of the food contains a wheat gluten from China that was contaminated with a chemical found in plastics and pesticides.
Some dry food is also affected. Late Friday, Hill’s Pet Nutrition recalled its Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food, which also included the tainted wheat gluten. Both companies used the same supplier that provided wheat gluten to Menu Foods. That’s the Canadian company that has recalled 60 million containers of wet dog and cat food sold under nearly 100 brand labels.
The recalls followed reports of dogs and cats dying of kidney failure after eating the food. Investigators are still trying to determine how many pets have been sickened, and exactly what is causing it.
Meanwhile, the Food and Drug Administration says it has found melamine, a chemical used to make plastics, in samples of those already-recalled wet pet foods from Menu. But the FDA adds it found no trace of a cancer drug also used as rat poison. New York state chemists say their tests found that substance.
If your pet is showing any signs of kidney problems — decreased appetite, lethargy, vomiting, or changes in urination — get the animal to your veterinarian immediately.
