Fly Like An Eagle?

I’ve spent the past two days pretty much glued to ESPN’s coverage of the 2007 NFL draft, and I must admit I’m underwhelmed with the choices my beloved Philadelephia Eagles have made.

The good news, according to Head Coach Andy Reid, is that the selections were actually based on the “best available player” at the time, something every NFL team says it will do on Draft Day but then never does. The bad news?  I’m not sure I understand the criteria used to determine “best” on their lists.

First, they traded away their first-round pick — OK, that happens –  but they traded a Number 26 overall to the hated Dallas Cowboys!!!  Then, ten picks later, they took Houston quarterback Kevin Kolb.

Reid says he spoke to starting QB Donovan McNabb about the selection, assuring him it had nothing to do with his recovery from a knee injury that kept him out of a big chunk of last season.  I don’t think Donovan is too worried.  Kolb may prove to be a decent NFL quarterback, but I can’t believe he was even the best QB available, let alone the best player!

The one pick I am excited about is running back Tony Hunt, a big bruiser from Penn State.  If he performs as I hope, those short third down conversions will become a lot easier, and clock control will improve as well.

Yes, it’s been a weird couple of days.  And yes, I’m ready for some football!
