Known Only To God…

Ah, Memorial Day… The traditional, if unofficial, start of summer… A three-day weekend… A chance for stores to host sales of all shapes and sizes…Sending out those high school graduation announcements

But how many remember what Memorial Day is REALLY all about?

Back in 1868, just three years after the American Civil War had ended, one of the Union commanders issued a general order that the graves of the soldiers lost in that conflict be tended as a sign of respect and remembrance, and flowers were laid at the graves inside Arlington National Cemetery. Within a few years, all the northern states were following Gen. Logan’s lead, and southern states joined the national observance once it was expanded to include all wars’ dead.

Unfortunately, the traditional observance of Memorial Day has declined significantly over the years. Many Americans seem to have forgotten the day’s meaning and traditions. Too many graves at too many cemeteries are increasingly ignored and neglected.

There’s a war going on right now, and brave soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen are paying the ultimate sacrifice. I really don’t care what you think about the war philosophically. But what I DO hope and pray is that, in the midst of the cookouts and the sleeping in, you take a moment to say a prayer of thanks for their bravery and commitment. Pray for their grieving families. And be grateful that they are willing to fight to keep this nation free. Thank you, veterans. And may God Bless you all.
