Back To School

I’ve decided to return to teaching, at least part time.

I got a call yesterday from Maureen at our local community college, offering me a class to teach this fall.  I stopped down today to talk to her.  I took it.

The best part is that now, if the college opens up any new sections of English or Speech, I’ll be on the short list to teach those, too, and from everything I’m hearing, enrollment is up.

My return to Academia reminds me, though, of just how expensive going to college can be.  Many of the students receive grants, but too often, there is still a big pile of bills staring back at them.

Even those fortunate enough to qualify for a full tuition free ride may still need to consider getting private education loans to pay for things like computers, private tutors, books and supplies, and housing.

That’s one of the main reasons why I bought my cap and gown instead of renting one.  I’m one of those really weird faculty members who actually enjoys attending commencement ceremonies.  Sure, the speeches are too long and the hall is too hot (especially while sporting an outfit designed by a bunch of medieval monks), but the students and their families are so proud, and rightfully so.

Going to college is a big investment.  It’s a lot of work and a whole lot of expense, both in terms of time and money, but earning that degree is something even more valuable.  It’s going to be good to be back, I think.
