I’m so glad that jury in Utah has convicted Warren Jeffs of conspiracy to commit rape.

Now that “The Prophet” faces five years to life in prison for forcing a 14-year-old girl to marry her 19-year-old cousin, and now that the husband has also been charged, maybe folks will begin to understand the abuse that goes on inside these polygamist cults.

Don’t get me wrong — I’m fully behind the notion that freedom  of religion is a very good thing — but it’s really quite a stretch to extend that freedom to illegal activities.   If Jeffs had been allowed to get away with this, a dangerous precedent would have been sent to allow virtually any type of behavior in the name of religion.

I sincerely hope the Lost Boys and child brides unfortunate enough to fall under Jeff’s control can get an effective life coach to help them break this cycle.   And with ever-improving methods of communication, maybe the light will shine a little brighter on these cockroaches.
