Jury Duty

Well, I got my summons in the mail today.  I’ve been selected for the November term of the county’s Grand Jury.

I’ve never been called for jury duty before.  I’ve always said I would be honored to serve, especially now that I’m not working in a news room where I could  potentially be covering the same trial.  But that was for being a petit juror.

Serving on a Grand Jury will be different.  Since those proceedings are always secret, I don’t really know all that much about what to expect.  Oh, sure, I understand it’s about deciding whether or not to indict people, but I don’t know much else.  Will they finish it in a single day?  Do they do voir dire for potential grand jurors, too?  How do deliberations work?

I just hope I’m healed enough by then to be able to sit through the session.  And will they let us take smoke breaks?
