I’m not exactly the model for nutrition and healthy habits, and as it turns out, I’ve been doing quite a bit wrong to help heal my broken pelvis.
First, the online experts I’ve read say I should cut back on protein and carbonated beverages. I’ve been living on ham and turkey sandwiches and huge amounts of Coke. Strike One.
Second, I should be increasing foods high in calcium. Aside from the milk in my coffee and my nightly butter pecan ice cream cone, I’m not really doing that. Orange juice has too much acid for my reflux, and those dark, leafy greens just don’t get it for me. Strike Two.
Vitamin D and exercise rate right up there, too. About the only exercise I get is pushing 50. And I’m not going to go stand in the sun for half an hour. Foul Tip — Vitamin D is in the multivitamin I take every day.
The worst thing, though, is the smoking. All my doctors have said smokers’ fractures heal only about half as quickly as those of non-smokers. Strike Three.
I suppose there are some nutritional supplements I could take, but to tell you the truth, I’m much more inclined to have a Coke and a big ole hunk of roast beef. Sigh.
